A VPN is optional. The service works without one, but some people prefer to use one for privacy or to avoid ISP throttling.

Certain internet providers slow streaming traffic during busy evening hours; a VPN can keep speeds more consistent in that situation. It also keeps your viewing habits private from your ISP.
